The Rat Race

By Jeremy Kendrick

To the city we all race
All upping our speed, increasing our pace
All heading to compete for first place

Speeding to have reality smack us in the face
Something I still haven’t been able to grow to embrace

No I’m not here to plead my case
For once, I just want to flip my cards over, and see that I’m showing ace

Call me crazy, but I long for my home base
I long for the calm of my birthplace

Starting my car, making my coffees grabbing my briefcase
Driving away from the nature that all my worries it seems to erase

This game we all play, the rat race
As for me, I find it a disgrace

As for me, I know where to find stillness in my headspace
As for me, you can find me among the solitude of nature’s grace
